Independence. It is what we all strive for, especially Keeshaw. Her road to independence has been a long one, but she isdetermined to succeed.
Not too long ago, Keeshaw had no motivation. She didn’t want to work or do much of anything and sometimes tried to stay in bed all day. Caregivers knew that motivating Keeshaw to participate in life was important to her well-being. Little by little she made strides in her efforts and started to work on her issues; positive reinforcement started to sink in and she started feeding something inside of her. Keeshaw became motivated, took pride in her appearance, started making new friends and then she started focusing on her own development.
Much has changed since her early days at the San Angelo State Supported Living Center. Years of classes, guidance, therapy and help from living at the facility have vastly improved Keeshaw’s outlook on life, and her days of wanting to stay in bed all day have vanished.
Keeshaw now loves to work. A huge smile beams across her face when recalling her most recent job, “I worked at Goodwill for 6 weeks. It was great and the people were so nice.” As she went on about her wonderful work experience, it was obvious that her job gave her a sense of purpose, building upon her self-esteem.
It’s that positive reinforcement that turned Keeshaw’s life around. After living in the transitional home at SASSLC for over a year, Keeshaw has moved into a group home in the community. She is ready to get a job, earn some money, and have some of that independence she worked so hard to earn.
